DC Comics Has Fired Eddie Berganza, But His Enablers are Still Around

DC Comics Has Fired Eddie Berganza, But His Enablers are Still Around

Berganza had been an employee at DC Comics for 25 years, and was a group editor who oversaw production of major titles, including Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. "We are committed to eradicating harassment and ensuring that all employees, as well as our freelance community, are aware of our policies, are comfortable reporting any concerns and feel supported by our Company". And like the comedian, the cultural shock wave launched by the Harvey Weinstein scandal has rocked his career. The accusations first came to light in a piece on Buzzfeed, which reported that DC promoted Berganza even after at least two women allegedly reported that he forcibly kissed and grope them.

Berganza has not yet commented on the allegations or his suspension and eventual firing. Cartoonist Joan Hilty also said Berganza kissed and groped her at the same bar in the early 2000s.

One of the stories recounted in the BuzzFeed article released late last week is Liz Gehrlein Marsham's account that, within weeks of being hired as an editor at DC Comics, Eddie Berganza forcibly kissed her and attempted to grope her at a bar near DC's former New York City offices. Eventually she and all of the other women involved in the group complaint left DC. According to Buzzfeed's sources, Berganza was infamous at the company for making offensive statements to colleagues and that his penchant for making people feel unsafe was "an open secret" at DC.

Berganza was disciplined following a 2012 incident and sought help, and there have been no reports of subsequent misconduct. Over the weekend, DC had issued a statement saying Berganza had been suspended and an investigation was underway.

DC was unmoved, and Berganza stayed in his role until Buzzfeed published its report. "DC prides itself on being a premier destination for top talent", she wrote in an email to employees, "as well as an incredible creatively collaborative place to work that is a safe and secure environment for our employees and extended freelance family". But for many, many comic book creators and fans, that wasn't almost enough.

The women who made complaints against Berganza seven years ago have all sense moved on from the company.
