Florida finalizing deal with Dan Mullen

The University of Tennessee's search for its next football coach is not officially two weeks old, but sources close to the process of finding Butch Jones' replacement believe the Vols could have their next head coach within 72 hours. He also worked at Florida previously as an assistant during the extremely successful Urban Meyer era.

When the Florida job opened in 2015, former Gator athletic director Jeremy Foley immediately dismissed Mullen as a candidate.

Mullen, who has been linked to several coaching vacancies, said he planned on staying with the Bulldogs during his postgame press conference following his team's 31-28 loss to Ole Miss on Thursday.

Sports, Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen is Florida's new top target and a decision is expected by the end of the day Sunday. You look at our fanbase and the program we've built, I think it's pretty special.

Following the 2014 season, Mullen criticized former defensive coordinator Geoff Collins for leaving MSU for the same position at Florida calling it a "lateral move". Mullen led the Bulldogs to an 8-4 record this year, and in spite of their loss to the University of MS on Thursday, they will be playing in a bowl game for the eighth straight season. While he did not hire Mullen at Mississippi State, the two reportedly had a good relationship there before Stricklin left for Gainesville.
