Black Ferns beaten in sevens quarter-final

The season curtain-raiser saw England dusting off the cobwebs but they still did enough to win three matches from three in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series - setting up a last-eight tie against rivals Australia.

The All Blacks Sevens, who were rattled in the first half by South Africa's showing, clawed back into the game in the second period.

They faced the challenge of New Zealand, who followed a 14-12 quarter-final win over Kenya by then overcoming England 14-5 in the last four.

New Zealand typically fought back after Rosko Specman was yellow carded‚ with tries through Andrew Knewstubb and captain Scott Curry to make it a nervy end to the match.

The reigning series champions fell to a 14-12 defeat after a late converted try handed the Americans a shock victory.

New Zealand almost came back in the second half after Rosko Specman was sent to the sin bin.

"As a first tournament for us this season I'm really proud of the continuous effort and the attitude the boys displayed in every single game", he said.

Next week sees the teams come to Cape Town with England looking to defend their crown in the Mother City.

South Africa made a blistering start to the final, with Philip Snyman, Senatla and Kwagga Smith scoring tries in the opening four minutes of the contest. "We want to focus on our processes and if we leave the result and the result doesn't go our way then we're still happy", he added. With the conversion good, Fiji mounted their comeback through Jerry Tuwai, the quick footed playmaker running in an easy score after multiple phases of play stretched the defence thin.

On day one the Blitzboks topped Pool A with emphatic wins over Kenya (48-5) and Canada (28-0) while battling to a rusty 19-10 win over Uganda in their opening game of the tournament.
