Everton confirm Sam Allardyce as new manager

Everton have chosen former England boss, Sam Allardyce, as the club's new manager, following the dismissal of Ronald Koeman last month.

Allardyce returns to club management six months after resigning from Crystal Palace, having saved the London side from relegation.

Everton boss Sam Allardyce should be eyeing Patrick van Aanholt.

David Unsworth remains in caretaker charge as the Toffees face West Ham at Goodison Park at 20:00 GMT.

Allardyce will take charge of the team in the next 48 hours. But the chance to turn around Everton's faltering ship has lured him back, and Allardyce is expected to have a watching brief at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

Under-23 team manager Unsworth had taken temporary charge, but recent heavy defeats ended any lingering hopes that the former Blues' defender would get the role on a full-time basis.

Having spent heavy to bring in reinforcements over the summer, Everton have struggled to click this season; the Toffees now sit 17th in the Premier League, two points above the drop zone, and have already been dumped out of the Europa League, following a disastrous showing in the group stage.

That victory, when the Toffees came from two down late on to secure a 3-2 victory over Watford, looked like it might be a turning point.

Everton are now 17th in the table and have won just one of seven games in all competitions under Unsworth, who is the club's under-23s manager.

Everton's chief problem is clear to see. Everton have endured a busy schedule this season, with Saturday's clash their 26th of a campaign that began in the Europa League third qualifying round in July. They have conceded more than twice as many goals as they have scored having failed to replace leading scorer Romelu Lukaku following his summer departure for Manchester United.

He previously held talks with the club's hierarchy only to announce he had withdrawn because he felt they were hesitating. But that turned sour after only one match, with Allardyce stepping down in September 2016 following a newspaper sting.
