India doctors fired for wrongly declaring newborn dead

India doctors fired for wrongly declaring newborn dead

A team led by the DCP, additional DCPs and three ACPs from the northwest district has prepared a two-page questionnaire for the medical staff. DCP (northwest) Aslam Khan said that the questioning would continue on Tuesday.

Delhi's Max Super Specialty Hospital has sacked two doctors, who had declared a 22-week-old premature baby dead even when he was alive.

"They handed us both bodies wrapped like a courier package from the back door". The girl was declared to be stillborn, while the boy was in critical condition until he, too, was declared dead, according to CNN. "They haven't told us whether he'll survive".

The incident at one of the capital's most upmarket hospitals has provoked a national debate about the state of Indian private healthcare, which can be prohibitively expensive. India's health minister, JP Nadda, called the incident "heartbreaking".

Speaking to ANI, Jain said, "As soon as we received the information, we started the enquiry into the matter".

The case has sparked outrage across the country, police are involved, and the New Delhi health minister has threatened to cancel the hospital's license. Cops are also probing Ashish's allegation that the hospital had asked them to pay Rs 50 lakh for keeping the baby in its nursery.

The Delhi Police registered a case of attempt to culpable homicide against the hospital.

Earlier, the hospital said two experts from IMA were included in the investigation team set up by the Max Healthcare authorities. Dr. KK Aggarwal, president of the association, attempted to take some heat off the fired physicians. "I don't think any doctor will do it wilfully", he said.

"I wouldn't have opened the polythene if it weren't for the ladies of the family - they insisted on seeing the boy's face", said Rohit Kumar, the child's father.

The major misstep comes after doctors at another hospital in India found that a 52-year-old woman had been carrying an aborted baby in her abdomen for 15 years according to Life News Friday.
