Strahan on Eli Manning not starting: It's 'just not right'

The real reason for the New York Giants' decision to start Geno Smith rather than Eli Manning at quarterback this Sunday may be a desire to save Manning, their most valuable possession, from permanent harm.

"I have nothing but the most respect for him and everything he's achieved and accomplished in his career", Brady said.

McAdoo said on Tuesday the plan was to start Manning in the matchup with the Raiders and replace him with Geno Smith for the second half.

"You know that's really everything you want in an National Football League player, and I think Eli has always provided that for the team". Smith will start this week, and rookie Davis Webb will get some playing time over the next five games, also.

The Giants gave the two-time Super Bowl MVP the option to start the first half of their remaining games in order to keep his consecutive-games streak alive, but Manning declined.

That's a ringing endorsement for Manning from one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game and one of his biggest rivals.

"I don't think they're handling it very well".

"I think there's always these types of situations".

"My feeling is that if you are going to play the other guys, play them", Manning said. Manning wasn't interested in starting just to start.

I have always thought there is something to be said for a person showing loyalty, whether it be in a marriage, in a friendship, in a teammate or as an employee.

"I think it just goes a lot higher than the players on the field". Basically both players believe that if the Giants really wanted to bench Manning, they should have let him play out the season and then figured things out in the offseason. "And that's just pro sports".

In hindsight, McAdoo voiced on Friday that he had no regrets in how everything went down, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
