Donald Trump cancels February visit to London

President Trump announced he was canceling a trip to London in a late night tweet that blamed his predecessor Barack Obama for a "bad deal" involving a new US embassy. In a tweet, he blamed the Obama administration.

But President Trump says he's not happy with the office and its location so doesn't want to cut the official ribbon to open it.

President Donald Trump has reportedly canceled plans to visit Britain next month.

MPs are also determined to prevent Trump from addressing the United Kingdom parliament due to his contentious policies including the crackdown of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries and his Twitter-support to the far-right group Britain First.

With demonstrators having threatened mass protests if Mr Trump ever set foot in the country, the President himself took to Twitter to explain the cancellation.

In December Ambassador Woody Johnson said he was looking forward to welcoming the president when he visited, adding: "I think he will be very impressed with this building and the people who occupy it".

The visit was due to coincide with the opening of the new U.S. embassy, at Nine Elms on the banks of the Thames.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "Our position is that an offer for a state visit has been extended and accepted".

In addition to increased safety at the new embassy location in the Nine Elms district on the South Bank of the Thames, the building better accommodates its 1,000 employees, who occupied the old building that was only meant for 800, according to The Times.

Trump was embroiled in a public spat with British Prime Minister Theresa May late a year ago after he retweeted three anti-Muslim videos from far-right group Britain First.

Former Labour leader Ed Miliband replied to Trump's tweet shortly after it was posted, challenging the assertion that it was Trump's dissatisfaction with the deal that had derailed the visit.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan also called out Trump for promoting the "vile, extremist" Britain First, which "exists exclusively to sow divisions and hatred in our country".

Asked about Trump's stated reasons for refusing to open the new embassy, Farage replied: "He's the real estate guy".

However, relations between the pair have been strained since May became the first foreign leader to visit Trump following his inauguration in January 2017.
