HTC Vive Pro revealed at CES 2018, higher resolution and integrated headphones

HTC Vive Pro revealed at CES 2018, higher resolution and integrated headphones

Instead, the new headset is meant to serve as a new flagship product, with the original Vive becoming the company's "entry-level" VR headset. This device takes what the HTC Vive is and ramps every aspect up another notch. It will be available in the summer.

The Vive Wireless Adaptor will ship in quarter three of 2018 to customers worldwide. This will make it easier to decide if you want to download, whether it's one of 1,000 standalone titles or the 325 available for subscription. The headset is compatible with exiting SteamVR base stations. But the pricey system required an equally pricey PC, and the cable attachments between the two made for a clunky experience.

HTC Vive also announced an optional Wireless Adaptor for both Vive and Vive Pro, allowing you to cut the cord from your headset and go completely wireless. "Wireless VR has been on almost every VR user's wish list since the technology was unveiled", Frank Soqui, GM of the virtual reality group at Intel, said in a statement. HTC said that the adaptor will offer "lower latency and better performance". It didn't disclose the pricing. It's an upgrade over the original Vive that increases resolution, includes integrated audio, and more.

HTC teased a better resolution for its Vive VR headset, and while they were correct, the newly announced Vive Pro appears to have some extra perks as well.

This is created to make graphics and text much sharper for the wearer. Pro also includes dual microphones with active noise cancellation and two front-facing cameras.

Finally, HTC has released a new update for the Vive Video app. Thanks to that bump, HTC says "text, graphics, and [the] overall experience all come into sharper view". The new portal features sample VR previews that give quick interactive glimpses into a game.

HTC were rumored to unveil their new Vive Pro headset at CES, and here we are - with the new Vive Pro aimed at fixing some of the problems that the first-gen Vive headset had. Beyond improvements to the user interface, HTC is adding Vimeo videos to the platform.

We'll have to wait and see whether the Pro's headset fit or built-in audio offer significant improvements over last year's headphone-strap release, or whether the Pro's lenses or other elements receive noticeable upgrades.
