Matt Nagy a solid choice to jump-start Trubisky's development

Matt Nagy a solid choice to jump-start Trubisky's development

Nagy joins Marc Trestman (2013-14) as the only Bears head coach since the merger to have previously worked as an offensive coordinator.

Nagy eased those concerns for Pace during their meeting in Kansas City on Sunday morning, taking full responsibility for the play-calling miscues and explaining how he will become a better coach from it. Nagy echoed that as he was introduced at Halas Hall on Tuesday afternoon as the 16th head coach in Bears' history. Pairing Trubisky with the correct offensive mind was a major point of emphasis when Pace embarked on the coaching search.

"Up-and-coming, smart guy", Chiefs assistant head coach Brad Childress said of Nagy. There will be hardships and setbacks along the way - and yes, you hope Nagy isn't having to apologize to his team or the media on a weekly basis for his mistakes. Many wanted the Bears offense to finally enter the 21st century and this hire just may do that. One game never should define any coach, especially one before Nagy gets his chance to run his own ship. Chicago was 5-11 this season and hasn't finished above.500 since letting Lovie Smith go following a 10-6 finish in 2012, two years after its most recent visit to the playoffs. Because of that, the Bears showed Fox the door.

Nagy, who has spent the last 10 seasons coaching in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, recently completed his fifth season as a coach with Kansas City and his first this season as the team's offensive coordinator. He threw for 374 touchdowns and 18,866 yards. However, he had just seven touchdown passes to go along with seven interceptions and 10 fumbles. He had a 104.7 passer rating.

The 39-year old Nagy started to emerge as a candidate for coaching vacancies after he took over play calling duties from Reid late in the season.

The Chiefs, after scoring 21 points in the first half, were shut out afterward and wound up losing 22-21 in the wild-card round. It's a decision that will dictate just how long he serves as Chicago's general manager. Of course, some may think it's the kids running the school.

Fired Bears' coach John Fox had no trouble getting extra effort from his players, but failed to develop young talent and struggled with game plans and adjustments. Pace put all of his eggs in the Trubisky basket.

If the Bears can finally get Trubisky going, they'd have the potential to double their win total in 2018. The Bears had no playmaking receivers, and their offensive line got banged up this season. Picking the right head coach was the first piece. Nagy made it clear, though, that everyone will be held accountable, no one more than himself, and that should be an excellent situation in which Trubisky can grow.

The Chicago Bears had a few primary objectives this offseason.

The Chiefs and Nagy were said to be very high on Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky coming out of the draft previous year.
