Nick Kyrgios Reaches Brisbane International Final

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has reached the Brisbane International final after defeating defending champion Grigor Dimitrov.

Kyrgios, the world No 17, is the highest ranked Australian going into his home grand slam, which starts on January 15, and he gave a timely reminder of his talents by winning his first trophy of the season.

Third seed Kyrgios followed him into the final four with a come from behind three set win over Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov on Friday.

The Australian's world ranking will improve to 18 after reaching the Brisbane final and will climb to 17 if he claims the title.

He'll play Ryan Harrison, who led 7-6 (6), 4-2 when Denis Istomin retired from their quarterfinal match with a hip strain.

While surprised not to see Tomic in Brisbane, Kyrgios appeared to be the only one not shocked by De Minaur's semi-final berth.

Kyrgios overpowered Harrison in the same manner as in their previous two clashes - Tokyo 2016 and Madrid 2017 - without conceding any set.

Kyrgios is the first Australian into the Brisbane International final since Lleyton Hewitt won the 2014 crown when he beat Roger Federer.

"I try to block it out most of the time because one week they're saying something good and one week they're saying something bad, so I guess I don't really listen to it at all", Kyrgios said. "I played a pretty loose game to get broken and then, pretty much from then on, I felt in control of the match", Kyrgios said.

The 29-year-old German was in sparkling form, firing 41 winners and making just 23 unforced errors to win 6-4 7-6 (4/7) after 90 minutes on court.

The 31-year-old, who won 22 national titles in rowing, finished third in his debut last year and said it had been a battle in hard conditions.

However, after saving five break points early in the contest, Kyrgios soon took charge of proceedings and ultimately won easily.

Dimitrov, who survived two match points to beat local hope John Millman in the previous round, needed a solitary break to close out the match.
