Overwatch League-Twitch Deal Worth At Least $90M

With the inaugural season for the Overwatch League beginning tomorrow, fans of Blizzard's team-based shooter looking to tune in might be wondering exactly where they can go to watch the action unfold. The Overwatch League in-game menu isn't just for staring at the shiny new skins - players can watch the games via this menu when they're live.

Like all the other Overwatch events we've seen over the years, the Overwatch League will have skins, allowing spectators to distinguish between one team from another. On the other, many are saying that $5 per skin is a little on the steep side and that the skins are merely color palette updates. Clicking on these buttons takes you to a submenu where you can purchase team skins for all of the game's 26 characters.

You'll be able to purchase them with a new type of currency.

The skins were released today by Blizzard, with each skin available to unlock for 100 League Tokens each. After a heated preseason display, twelve professional teams from America, Britain, China and South Korea will now be going head to head for the official top honours in Blizzard's esports title.

The two-year deal with Twitch gives the platform exclusive worldwide rights to all the matches, which will be streamed in English, Korean and French. Preseason games streamed on the Overwatch League homepage and, but the question has always been whether Blizzard and Twitch would settle on a streaming deal in time for the start of the League. Considering that skins are a big deal to many fans of the FPS, this news will be disappointing to those who were looking forward to adding to their collection.

"Our fans love to engage with content on Twitch, and we wanted to drive significant viewership of the Overwatch League in its inaugural season and beyond", said Armin Zerza, COO of Blizzard Entertainment.

The first season of the Overwatch League will run until June, with playoffs and finals scheduled for July.

For those unaware, the historic first match for this season between the Overwatch League's San Francisco Shock and the Los Angeles Valiant begins on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 4:00 PM PT. Blizzard has also been kind enough to post the day's full schedule, which can be seen right here.
