Rope gives way, 3 soldiers fall from sky

Rope gives way, 3 soldiers fall from sky

Three paratroopers have been injured while practising slithering operations from a rope hanging from a Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH) here.

Three Army personnel were injured during a security drill at the Army's parade ground in New Delhi.

Slithering is an exercise where troops are dropped from a helicopter in an area of operation using a rope attached to the chopper.

The accident, a video of which has become viral on social media, occurred on January 9.

Following the incident, the Army has temporarily suspended all such slithering operations. As the soldiers start to descent, the rope is seen slipping off the helicopter which results in a free fall.According to media reports, the incident took place on January 9 and the soldiers are now undergoing treatment at Army Hospital Research And Referral in New Delhi.

An inquiry has been called into the matter and the investigation is in progress.

"Slithering operation ceases for all ALH with immediate effect after the accident". The incident raises serious concern on the safety measures being carried out while conducting such kind of drills.

The Army Day is celebrated each year on January 15 in recognition of Lieutenant General KM Cariappa's taking over as first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. The ceremony is being held annually on this day since 1949.
