Russian Federation urges Turkey to help stop rebel raids in Syria

Turkey had previously voiced its discontent to Russian and Iranian officials via military and diplomatic channels about the government forces' violations of de-escalation zones, according to the sources.

Russian Federation said that a recent drone attack against its military base in Syria would not have been possible without assistance from a country possessing satellite navigation technology.

Drones that attacked Russian bases in Syria last week were sent from Idlib, a "de-escalation" zone controlled by anti-Damascus fighters, the Russian defence ministry's official newspaper said Wednesday.

The Russian Ministry of Defence said on Monday its military was able to capture three of the "small-sized air targets of unknown identity".

Each of them carried several explosive devices under their wings, and were guided from up to 100km away by Global Positioning System. "At the same time, I remain in my opinion - it (the organization) does not just act independently, but with the help of the relevant special services of Western countries, with their direct connivance, their assistance", said Yury Shvytkin, deputy chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, reported RIA. The drone attack reportedly took place overnight from January 5 to January 6. The drones were carrying explosive elements, but Russian air defense systems repulsed the attack, and no one was hurt.

One of the myriad Syrian opposition groups is the most probable suspect, Suchkov said.

Two soldiers were killed in an attack on New Year's Eve.

It also said it was "outraged" by the ongoing siege in Eastern Ghouta, another rebel-held area, where the United Nations human rights chief said on Wednesday that at least 85 civilians have been killed since December 31.

ISIS has also recently retaken portions of Idlib, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin's declaration of victory in Syria late past year.

The official confirmed that the very instance militants possessed the knowhow to make drones, control them at a distance of tens of kilometers and issue commands to drop bombs on the basis of Global Positioning System coordinates should become a matter of great concern for the entire world community.

Now Russia is adding that a unusual coincidence took place during the attack.

Russian and Syrian bombing runs have increased in Idlib in the last week, resulting in the deaths of many civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory For Human Rights.

"They thought the base was secure, but now it seems it is vulnerable", Maxim Suchkov of the Russian International Affairs Council told The Washington Post.

Russian Federation said it was also controlled by Turkish armed forces.

Cavusoglu emphasised that in efforts to bring peace to Syria, Russia and Iran were the "guarantors" of the government side and Turkey of the opposition. They say the declaration by Putin could be aimed at the domestic audience in Russian Federation, as he is bidding for another presidential run in the country's upcoming elections in March.
