South African political party storms H&M stores over advertisement

Menlyn Park Shopping Centre Management also confirmed the protest action at H&M store, saying that the safety and security of their customers, staff and tenants was of utmost importance, and the affected area has been secured by the South African Police Serves (SAPS).

The image advertising the £7.99 jumper was removed from H&M's U.S. and United Kingdom websites shortly after the outrage broke and the retailer quickly issued a statement apologising to "anyone it may have offended".

The company has since apologised for the advertisement.

Video footage showed activists trashing displays, kicking over clothes rails and shoving mannequins.

While nobody was arrested, police arrived and fired rubber bullets into the crowd scattering the protesters.

The outrage stemmed from a recent ad photo released by H&M showing a black boy wear a green sweater with the slogan "coolest monkey in the jungle" on it.

However, EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu congratulated members for physically confronting racism.

Groups of protestors went to various H&M stores across the country, including several malls in Johannesburg, in the capital Pretoria, and in the northern Limpopo province.

"We are not going to allow anyone to use the colour of our skin to humiliate us, to exclude us", he added.

It is worth noting that the boy's mother, according to The Blaze, has told people to "Get Over It" She says the sweatshirt was not racist.

"The time of apologies for racism are over", he said.

In an attempt to cool the backlash, H&M obviously took down the hoodie advertisement that started this whole mess, but that hasn't stopped singer The Weeknd from cutting ties with the label.

"Our marketing policy, campaign productions and work is something we constantly discuss internally and with creative professionals. I'm deeply offended and will not be working with H&M anymore".
