Turkey issues travel warning for the United States citing 'arbitrary detentions' risks

Turkey's Foreign Ministry warned citizens to avoid travel to the US, citing the growing risk of terrorist attacks and other violence - a day after the State Department said the same about Turkey.

A statement by the Turkish foreign ministry - using nearly identical language to the original United States advisory - warns of an increase in terrorism and "risk of arbitry detention" in America.

Foreign ministry says revise travel plans or act with caution because of risks of "terrorism" and arbitrary detention.

The ministry mentioned recent attacks at Ohio University's campus, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport, Dar Al-Farooq Mosque in Minnessota and a church in Texas.

The tit-for-tat diplomacy fits the recent deterioration in relations between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Ties between the allies have deteriorated over what many in Turkey perceive as a USA reluctance to extradite US -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkey blames for a 2016 failed coup attempt.

The move came after the U.S. announced a new travel advisory on Wednesday and named Turkey as a country with an "increased security risk" along with Sudan, Pakistan and Guatemala. Earlier this month, a United States jury found a Turkish banker guilty of helping Iran to evade U.S. sanctions.

In return, the Turkish foreign ministry said Turkish public sector employees in the U.S. had been detained on "baseless allegations".
