UN Agency In Palestine Says To Continue Work Under UN Mandate

Israel's Channel 10 television reported Friday that the United States had already frozen a payment to UNRWA, but a spokesman for the UN aid agency said Saturday that they "have not been informed directly of a formal decision either way by the U.S. administration".

In December 2016, former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry offered six principles that he said would satisfy Israeli and Palestinian needs, among them, Jerusalem as the mutual capital of both states.

Palestinian officials have said Mr Trump's declaration on Jerusalem, overturning decades of U.S. policy, meant he could not serve as an honest broker in peace negotiations that Washington has been trying to revive, and they condemned his remarks on a funding halt as blackmail.

Safadi said Arabs have three main goals, including invalidating Trump's decision.

Al-Quds said King of Jordan Abdullah II called for creating an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. That would be a powerful message to Israel and its few supporters that there can be no peace between Israel and the Arab world as long as the Palestinian inalienable right for a state of their own with East Jerusalem as its capital continues to be denied.

Based on the discussions, Ministers will make further recommendations to a full meeting of the Arab League, due to be held at the end of this month, Safadi added. At the time of Prince Salman's startling revelation, it was also reported that the future Saudi monarch warned Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to either get with the new program or be replaced, all of which is consistent with the Egyptian tapes. "I made a simple suggestion, that the funds for UNRWA should be gradually transferred to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, with clear criteria for supporting real refugees, rather than fictitious refugees, which is what is happening today under UNRWA". "This needs to be resolved by the parties to the conflict in the context of peace talks, based on United Nations resolutions and worldwide law, and requires the active engagement by the global community", Gunness said in a statement.

He did not elaborate on the timing of the diplomatic moves nor did he say whether he was referring to a U.N. Security Council or General Assembly resolution.

The Israeli leader said he first raised the issue with Washington's United Nations envoy Nikki Haley in June.

Israel captured eastern Jerusalem - which includes Judaism's holiest sites, the Temple Mount and the Western Wall in the Old City - and the West Bank in the 1967 defensive war, seizing it from Jordanian occupation and reuniting the city.
