WhatsApp Group chats can easily be infiltrated

This feature is very useful, especially when you are in a group where there are a lot of members who exchange hundreds of messages at any given time.

Researchers announced they had discovered flaws in WhatsApp's security at the Real World Crypto security conference in Switzerland, Wired reports. The team argues their findings undermine each app's security claims for multi-person group conversations to varying degrees.

Researchers in Germany say there is a flaw in WhatsApp that could allow an attacker to infiltrate group chats, according to Wired.

As per the report, any hacker can gain access to a group chat on WhatsApp, despite end-to-end encryption. Earlier, the news of the application allowing the group admin the authority to restrict other members from sending text messages, photographs, videos, GIFs, documents or voice messages was making headlines.

According to the report, the attack on WhatsApp group chats takes advantage of a bug.

The problem sits in WhatsApp's authentication mechanism for adding people to group chats. If the admin is keeping an eye on things, then he/she would know that a foreign party has entered the group and warn members about it.

But the Ruhr University researchers and Johns Hopkins' Green point out several tricks that could be used to delay detection. So they highlighted that any person who controls the app' servers could get the access the WhatsApp group chat. Rösler noted that groups with several administrators could be even more vulnerable, as the invitations could be spoofed from multiple different accounts to make them harder to detect. So to keep yourself safe from prying eyes of someone who shouldn't be seeing your messages, keep an eye on who is added to the group.

Alex Stamos, chief security officer for WhatsApp owner Facebook Inc., downplayed the vulnerability today in a series of tweets on Twitter, where he emphasized the app's new chat member notifications as a key security feature. German Cryptographers, in their research, have found out that WhatsApp group chats are hackable citing that any new member can read the group chats.

WhatsApp said it had "carefully looked" at the flaw and reassured users that their encrypted messages were safe.

Stamos argued against the report, stating that there are many ways to check and validate the people on a group chat.

Researchers reported an alleged security flaw for WhatsApp that supposedly violates privacy.

This is a big problem, because WhatsApp prides itself on end-to-end encryption for its messages.
