Youngest Sutherland Springs shooting survivor to be released from hospital

Youngest Sutherland Springs shooting survivor to be released from hospital

A 5-year-old boy who survived the Sutherland Springs shooting was the last victim to be released from the hospital. It was deemed the worst mass shooting in Texas history.

Among the injured was now-6-year-old Ryland Ward, who was shot several times.

The Wilson County Fire Department will bring Ward home in one of its fire trucks.

Sutherland Springs community members gathered in wait, holding signs including "Welcome home handsome" and "Yay buddy".

"These are happy tears", said Terrie Smith, one of the dozens who lined up along the main intersection of town.

A spokesperson with the University Health System said Ward is the last patient to be released from its care and some members of the Sutherland Springs community will be on hand to welcome Ward home.

"He's really strong. We're all rooting for him".

"As soon as we got him outside, his dad [Chris Ward] ran up to me and said, 'They killed my baby.' "And I told his dad, 'No, he's not dead, he's still alive, '" Duncan said".

The little boy has become a symbol of strength.

- The youngest survivor of the Sutherland Springs church shooting will finally be released from the hospital after a two-month stay. The first responders behind the wheels of the convoy were some of the first to arrive on the scene of the shooting.

Numerous people who escorted Ryland home on Thursday responded to the shooting on that day. They say helping Ryland heal means never forgetting his family or friends either.

Ryland was with his stepmother, Joann, at the time of the shooting. In all, 26 people died. "This little boy has the best fighting spirit I've ever seen out of anybody in my entire life. Little Ryland is like a little grandson to me and now he's home", said Terrie Smith.
