Angelina Jolie steals the show on Bafta red carpet

Many also wore Time's Up badges, such as red carpet presenters Edith Bowman and Dermot O'Leary wore.

Having gained entry to the Royal Albert Hall, London, activists from Sisters Uncut - a group opposed to government cuts to domestic violence services - chanted "sisters united will never be defeated" before staging a sit-down protest along the red carpet.

"The police and prisons are no solution to domestic violence". Instead of refinancing refuges, reinstating legal aid and providing desperately needed housing for domestic violence survivors, Theresa May continues to turn her back on both survivors and the solutions they need.

In the same year, Sisters Uncut stormed the red carpet for the London premiere of the film Suffragette. If Theresa May really cared about domestic violence, she would refund these services immediately.

They describe themselves as a feminist group taking direct action for domestic violence services. Since then, the situation has only got worse, and we have campaigned relentlessly to push the government to take state responsibility for keeping survivors safe. Such criminalisation of survivors is already happening in the United Kingdom, and is extremely risky, as highlighted in recent reports about the death of Katrina O'Hara, who was murdered after being wrongly investigated by the police instead of her violent partner. Recent research by the Prison Reform Trust found that survivors reported being repeatedly arrested by the police despite their partner being the primary aggressor.

'The Prime Minister has made clear that she intends the Bill, which is still under consultation in parliament, to bring in tougher sentences and "deliver more convictions" for domestic violence.

And we too are inspired by the Latina Alianza Nacional De Campesinas (National Farmworkers Women's Alliance) who inspired the whole movement by writing an open letter showing solidarity with Hollywood actors who had experienced abuse, recognising that gender-based violence happens throughout society.

The letter, published by The Observer and signed by Emma Thompson, Carey Mulligan, Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Chan, Keira Knightley and Emma Watson, said the Bafta are a time to "celebrate this tremendous moment of solidarity and unity across borders by coming together and making this movement international".

The Times Up movement clearly links to our work as Sisters Uncut, and we were proud to share the carpet with invited activists who were invited to the ceremony representing important groups such as UK Black Pride, the "Dagenham Girls" who fought for equal pay and IMKAAN. The group was formed by domestic violence survivors and sector workers in 2014, and now has a network of groups across the country.
