Apple confirms HomePod may leave unsightly marks on wood

Apple confirms HomePod may leave unsightly marks on wood

That's one of the takeaways from two in-depth reviews the HomePad, which went on sale last week for $350.

According to a review from Wirecutter (via The Verge), the HomePod can actually leave a white ring behind. Now that the HomePod is out in the wild, reports have started trickling in from users complaining about the $349 smart speaker's unfortunate side effect on wood furniture.

Setup is almost instant and effortless: The procedure is unlike that of any non-Apple smart speaker I've used, and it's essentially the same process as for pairing AirPods. Despite fading over several days, the reviewer could still see the blemish. While there are no scuffs or marks that are going to be formed, a white circular ring is going to appear.

Apple has put the stains down to the oils in the HomePod's silicon base interacting with wooden surfaces, but so far its only remedy to stop the damage is moving the HomePod to another surface.

Pocket-Lint said that its staff now has to "sand and then re-oil our worktop" to remove the blemish.

The Apple HomePod is capable of producing audio that sounds fantastic, but it is far from being ideal.

It's worth noting that, in our own testing with HomePod in a number of places and on a range of different surfaces, we've not observed any issues with left-behind rings.

"Apple is compressing their margins a bit, wanting to go big or go home", said Al Cowsky, TechInsight's costing manager. Specifically, it told Wirecutter that "the marks can improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface" and that users should "try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer's suggested oiling method". If yes, did you manage to wipe it clean?

The iPhone maker has since updated its HomePod support page to reflect the issue.

The Guardian found that the HomePod did not leave marks on glass, Formica or plastic-coated reconstituted wood commonly used in flat-pack furniture.

Apple's support pages put repairing the HomePod at a hefty £268.44, which is £70 more than a single Sonos One, and nearly the cost of three Amazon Echo speakers.
