Cancer vaccine eliminates tumor in mice

The scientists at Stanford University in the U.S. said that injecting the vaccine directly into a tumour not only kills the original cancer, but also eliminates all traces of the specifically targeted cancer from the animal's entire body. The three subjects that relapsed were given a second shot of the new treatment which cleared up the tumors again.

Researchers at Stanford University have discovered a possible "vaccine" to treat cancer.

The results showed not only that all traces of the cancer were gone, but also even distant, untreated metastases could not be found.

It's been tested on mice with lymphoma, breast, colon and melanoma tumors. This activated the T cells in the mice, the cells responsible for determining how the immune system responds to foreign substances and illnesses.

"When we use these two agents together, we see the elimination of tumors all over the body", Ronald Levy, MD, professor of oncology, said. "In the mice, we saw fantastic, body-wide effects, including the elimination of tumours all over the animal", said Dr Levy, a Professor of Oncology.

"Only the tumour that shares the protein targets displayed by the treated site is affected".

The next step for the scientists is a small trial with 15 people who have been diagnosed with low-grade lymphoma.

Down the line, he believes oncologists could inject both into solid tumours in humans before surgery as a way to prevent recurrence from stray tumors that spread but weren't detected. If the injections are successful, Dr. Levy says the treatment could one day eliminate the need for the surgical removal of all kinds of tumors. Researchers say it is also a rapid and relatively cheap cancer therapy.

Out of the two immune agents used in the study, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine on January 31, 2018, one has already been approved for use in humans while the other has been tested for human use in several unrelated clinical trials.
