Facebook to release its own smart home speakers in July 2018

In a bid to take on the likes of Amazon and Google, commentators affirm the "laptop-sized" touchscreens on Facebook's smart speakers will provide a unique point of difference.

Love to listen the good quality of sound on speakers?

Facebook already tracks everything you do online so it can make more money from ads.

The devices won't be Echo or HomePod lookalikes. The two smart home speaker models, code-named Aloha and Fiona, will both have this type of screen with touch-sensors.

This innovative idea by Facebook will surely increase the smart speaker demand in the global market.

According to Digitimes Facebook will launch not one, but two distinct smart speaker models this July.

That 15-inch display is more than double the size of the 7-inch display sitting within the Echo Show, but what could it be used for?

Given Facebook's recent expansion into original video content, via the Facebook Watch platform, this display could also act as a dedicated screen for watching shows.

The 15-inch in-cell touchscreen panels will be sourced from LG display, while Pegatron will be the sole contract assembler of both of the Building 8 designed devices.

As well as acting as a social media device, it is claimed the smart speakers will play music thanks to licensing deals recently struck by Facebook with Sony and Universal Music.

Aloha, which will be marketed as "Portal", will be more sophisticated than Fiona - offering facial recognition technology on top of the use of voice commands. Portal will a wide-angle lens up front for this goal.

Supply chain sources claim Facebook initially planned a May release, however, made a decision to delay launch to further refine software and acoustic qualities. Prices for either the Aloha or Fiona have not been leaked.

Facebook is planning to build its own ecosystem for video consumer devices in the next five years, and the smart speaker is just the initial-stage product, with more terminal devices expected to be rolled out in the coming years, industry sources said.
