Leicester boss Puel: Mahrez explanation important to squad

Leicester are one of few Premier League sides without a relegation battle or fight for Champions League places on their hands, allowing Puel to concentrate on a bid for Cup glory.

The Algeria worldwide had hoped to move to City on transfer deadline day but the move fell through as Leicester valued Mahrez at £95 million but City were only willing to pay £65m.

Now Puel has criticised Manchester City for the first time over the timing of their £65m bid.

"We don't have a lot of players with the same quality as Riyad".

For some other teams, it is not a difficulty to replace their players.

Riyad Mahrez's next club: Where could the Leicester star go next?

Both Man City and the Algerian winger were ultimately left disappointed, though, as a move failed to materialise before the window closed for business. We are not a squad like some great teams at the top of the table.

"We need perhaps some others' respect", Puel said of Manchester City's approach for Mahrez at a press conference on Wednesday.

Mahrez returned to action for Leicester when he came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute of the 5-1 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday, a day after ending his strike and reporting for training.

"We had some solicitation from another club".

"I can not suffer this situation because other teams make this thing against us".

"I think for our fans, it will be important to put it right (the City game)", Puel said.

Mahrez is now pushing for a recall to Leicester's starting line-up on Friday night when they host Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

"It was a situation behind us, it was important Riyad gave his feeling in the dressing room, the details will remain inside the club", said Puel. "We need to move on, for him he needs to kick on, like the team the most important thing is in front of us".

"He travelled with the squad [last weekend]".
