McDonald's Commits To More Balanced Happy Meals by 2022

Currently, 28 per cent of Happy Meal combinations offered on menu boards in 20 of McDonald's major markets meet the new criteria.

By this June, all Happy Meal food combinations offered will be 600 calories or fewer. Already, several of the Happy Meal combinations available on US menu boards today meet the new nutrition criteria and will not be changing.

Additionally, McDonald's said that it will make cheeseburgers available in Happy Meals only if customers request them.

That leaves a hamburger, 4-piece or Chicken McNugget. McDonald's intends to restore chocolate milk to the menu once its comes up with a new formula with less added sugar. Bottled water will be added as a featured beverage choice on Happy Meal menu boards as well. It will also remove artificial flavors and colors and reduce artificial preservatives "where feasible".

That means at least half of the Happy Meals on menus around the world will be under 600 calories and under 650 mg of sodium, with less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat and less than 10 percent of calories from added sugar.

Here is a happy news for "Happy Meals" lovers.

Kenneth Wong, marketing professor at the Smith's School of Business at Queen's University, said it's not a coincidence that McDonald's is sprucing up the Happy Meal image now. According to the company, "for the first time, more than half of Happy Meals ordered in the USA have included water, milk or juice as their beverage of choice".

McDonald's has been tinkering with Happy Meals for several years in response to pressure from public health groups, and to lawsuits for using toys to market to kids.

The company says that 28% of Happy Meal combinations in 20 major markets now meet the new nutritional criteria.

Here are five things you probably didn't know about McDonalds' Happy Meals. The Cheeseburger will only be available at a customer's request. That is what happened when the company took soda off the official menu option for Happy Meals.

Today, we applaud McDonald's leadership in offering healthier kids' meals that will considerably increase consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, water and low-fat dairy for millions of families globally.
