Pakistanis bid farewell to nation's most prominent activist Asma Jahangir

The result is a cauldron of an unidentified stew, the ingredients of which defy the commandments of the preparation, in this case the principles of democracy. With the voices of intolerance getting louder and louder-causing wars, displacement, inequality, gender discrimination, and meaningless violence-Asma Jahangir's was one that challenged the status quo and exposed it with fearlessness and clarity.

Naveed Walter president Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) participated in the funeral of courageous human Human Rights defender Asma Jahangir in Lahore. The Hudood Ordinances (with her sister, 1990) and Children of a Lesser God: Child Prisoners of Pakistan (1993). As one of Pakistan's prominent human rights activists, she stood up against Islamic extremism, and was respected for her criticism of the militant Islamic groups in Pakistan. She previously served as Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief (2004 to 2010) and Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions (1998 to 2004).

"There was a time that human rights was not even an issue in this country".

The United Nations appointed her the special rapporteur for human rights in Iran, and her reports gave a voice to the Iranian people, many who were being treated inhumanely by their government.

We will remember Asma for her activism in the court in her own country, in worldwide platforms and her contributions to regional fora.

She was also the founding member of Women's Action Forum, Pakistan. She paid tribute to Asma as a beacon of hope for the new generation.

"In her teenage years, she came out on the roads against black laws and became an icon of hope", she said. The verdict was overruled by an appeals court thanks to the efforts of Asma and fellow activists. Several years ago, she briefly sent her family out of the country following threats from militant groups.

She was widely admired in the global humanitarian community and was seen as a champion of the downtrodden in Pakistan, which has a troubled rights record, especially for minorities. And she was unpopular back in Pakistan, perhaps in the same way as Butalia and Roy are in some circles in India.

Asma's own involvement in politics had its roots in her youth, when her father became a vociferous critic of the military dictatorship in the 1960s, leading to periods of imprisonment and house arrest, against which Asma and Hina protested. "I would like [to seek your] permission to fly the national flag at half mast on 13 February, 2018, the day of her funeral, in addition to day of our mourning".
