Russia Threatens YouTube, Instagram Over Videos Of Kremlin Official And Oligarch

Russian Federation has threatened to shut down YouTube and Instagram unless they agree to remove a video accusing Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Prikhodko of corruption.

The Guardian writes that Navalny claims Deripaska "was briefing Prikhodko on information on the 2016 US presidential campaign that he had received from Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign manager", although he offers no proof of this.

That clip was spotted by the team of anti-Kremlin opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose investigation into the circumstances around it found that Deripaska was aboard his yacht off the coast of Norway and was joined by Russia's deputy prime minister Sergei Prikhodko.

He used social media posts of a self-described "oligarch pickup artist" who calls herself Nastya Rybka, as well as open-source flight and maritime transport data, in the video investigation.

Miss Rybka posted several videos in 2016 showing Deripaska on his yacht talking with Deputy Prime minister Prikhodko.

The videos prove that by accepting a trip on Deripaska's yacht, Prikhodko had in effect been bribed by the former, Navalny says in a lawsuit against Rozkomnadzor, as reported by CrimeRussia.com. "An oligarch pays for all of this, including young women from escort agencies".

Unless the videos are removed voluntarily, either by YouTube, Instagram or Navalny, Russian internet providers may be forced to block the social media platforms. Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor included the materials on its register of blacklisted sites following the court order.

Last September, the Washington Post reported that Manafort had offered Deripaska updates on the campaign in an email he sent to the mogul just two weeks before Trump secured the Republican nomination.

He wrote that seven outlets were asked to take the information down before a Wednesday deadline including Maxim's Russian Federation website, where a list of jokes about Deripaska and Rybka had been taken down as of the early afternoon.

Navalny was not named in the suit, the representative said. Deripaska's spokesman denied that he ever received such an email.

The Manafort allegation is what intrigues some Russian anti-corruption watchdogs. It can close websites on a whim, even without a court order.

In spite of the refusal of big foreign internet companies to share data with the Russian Federation authorities, the FSB says it now has a method to collect encryption keys to spy on users' data, including means to decode to information from Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram.
