SpaceX's Falcon Heavy Rocket

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy Rocket

Looking back at 2017, the auto company reeled off its biggest milestones: record deliveries of its Model S and X, the arrival of its first Model 3, an updated Tesla Roadster (one now headed toward Mars after being launched inside a SpaceX rocket), a 500-mile range semi-truck, and the world's largest battery in Australia. The vehicle will occupy this orbit, says Elon Musk, for the next billion years or so.

But the Model 3 once again struck a discordant note.

At the same time, Tesla expects a big growth in sales of energy storage systems, they aim to triple sales in 2018. It's now planning to produce 2,500 Model 3s per week by the end of March. Tesla has never made a full-year profit since it went public in 2010. Multiple customers that have had deposits placed on the Model 3 cars since 2016 are reporting that they received an email stating that the auto will be delivered in "late 2018", while others are being informed that they'll have to wait until "early 2019", to receive the vehicle they paid for years previously.

Yet that hasn't phased investors. While the launch showcased company's ability to carry heavy payloads much beyond the lower earth orbit, the fact that it comes with reusable boosters drastically decreases the expense. They hit a new record-28,425 units combined-growing 28% compared to the same quarter previous year. But it fell woefully short on the Model 3, which went into production in July. In October, Tesla blamed "manufacturing systems suppliers" on malfunctioning battery assembly equipment in its Gigafactory 1 outside Reno, Nevada.

Eventually, the Tesla will be reduced to just its inorganic parts.

Tesla is now riding a production "s-curve".

Tesla said that now 54% of solar installations (solar panels and solar shingles) for the private sector are sold and not taken on lease, compared to 25% in the 4th quarter of 2016. The Model S and Model X followed similar trajectories, but the Model 3 will be on a much larger scale.

"What we can say with confidence is that we are taking many actions to systematically address bottlenecks and add capacity in places like the battery module line where we have experienced constraints, and these actions should result in our production rate significantly increasing during the rest of Q1 and through Q2". Clement Thibault, a senior analyst with the web site Investing.com, grumbled about Musk's recent fundraising efforts for The Boring Co., his new tunnel-drilling company. "We're going to productize the factory". "People want Tesla products, but Tesla can't stop spending more money than it has".

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, posted a final photo of the Tesla Roadster he launched into space on SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket on Instagram on Wednesday as it heads for Mars orbit and then the asteroid belt.

"I think we might be able to exceed the specs that we unveiled a year ago too, which is pretty exciting", he says.

This fact should make SpaceX the default choice for any satellite operator, space station builder, or asteroid miner that needs to launch anything truly massive into space.

It was a risk.

SpaceX's latest "first" - juggling multiple simultaneous rocket landings.

On Tuesday, SpaceX launched the Falcon Heavy rocket, generating fanfare similar to the liftoff of a space shuttle. But the mission succeeded with only minor glitches.

The fate of Starman and the Tesla is unclear.

"If we can send a Roadster to the asteroid belt, we can probably solve the Model 3 problem", he said. Mr Musk said that he expected the orbit could last a billion years - but it depends entirely on what sort of orbit it ends up in, and how it deals with the harsh environment of space.
