Tillerson: Talks with N. Korea in Pyeongchang not ruled out

"The Vice President will remind the world that everything the North Koreans do at the Olympics is a charade to cover up the fact that they are the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet", an aide for Pence told Axios on Sunday.

Speaking from Tokyo alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Pence didn't detail what the sanctions would be but he said they'd aim to halt Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile program "once and for all".

Pence's comments echoed those made by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who has also suggested a willingness to engage with North Korea around the Olympics.

Vice President Mike Pence will be attending the Olympics as well, and will lead the US delegation with his wife at the Friday opening ceremonies. The new sanctions are expected to be implemented by the Treasury Department before the conclusion of the Olympic Games.

"We'll be telling the truth about North Korea at every stop", Pence said. AKA the wee hours of the morning in the U.S. "So we have not given the phone (to North Koreans) and we can not give the phone until we confirm this is not a violation of the United Nations sanctions".

At the Olympic Athletes' Village in Gangneung, a three-story-tall North Korean flag hung from an athlete's balcony.

US Vice President Mike Pence is headed to Japan and South Korea ahead of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

He added that the move is a "further consolidation of the Kim family's power".

Though only 22 athletes will compete in events, the North's delegation will be among the largest at the Games.

But at JBER, part of the vice president's focus was on sending a message to North Korea.

The court on February 7 was still looking into appeals from 45 other Russian athletes and two coaches who hope to have rulings in time for the Winter Olympics.

United States officials declined to detail the expected sanctions beyond Mr Pence's comments, citing concerns that any additional information could be used by those trying to skirt the new measures.

Propaganda leaflets from North Korea marking the start of the 2018 Winter Olympics have been found in the mountains in the South Korean capital, Seoul. As his guest at the opening ceremony, he is taking the father of Otto Warmbier, an American student who died past year after being imprisoned in North Korea for 17 months.

Moon's office welcomed the decision to send Kim Yo Jong, which it said showed the North's willingness to cooperate in efforts to ease tensions in the Korean Peninsula.
