Trent Bridge misses out as European Central Bank confirms 2023 Ashes venues

Trent Bridge misses out as European Central Bank confirms 2023 Ashes venues

Hampshire's Ageas Bowl has been widely tipped to be awarded a lucrative Test against Australia when the European Central Bank board announces venues for the 2023 series and inaugural Twenty20 franchise tournament. Wednesday's decision has confirmed that Lord's has retained two Tests per summer as it now has.

"Of course we would have very much liked to have staged an Ashes Test, having hosted terrific matches here in 2013 and 2015; it would have been the icing on the cake".

Trent Bridge is one of eight venues selected to stage the new city-based T20 competition along with The Kia Oval, Lord's, Edgbaston, The SSE Swalec Cardiff, Emirates Old Trafford the Ageas Bowl and Emerald Headingley. This will allow both touring teams to play at the prestigious ground each year.

David Mann, the Ageas Bowl chief executive, said: "We are hugely excited by the prospect of hosting one of the teams in the new Twenty20 Competition which starts in 2020 and is set to transform domestic cricket in England and Wales, and we also relish the opportunity to present regular worldwide and first-flass cricket options to all our communities across the South of England". Although it was thought that some individual games could be taken to other venues such as Bristol or the Olympic Stadium in London, that has not materialised.

The next round of worldwide games will see Lord's continue to stage two Tests per summer, while Edgbaston has been confirmed as the exclusive home of T20 Finals Day.

But the Emirates Riverside has secured global cricket up until 2024, including a clash against Australia in 2020.

Director of Cricket Newell believes a centrally-located venue with a capacity of just over 17,000 will benefit the competition, saying: "I think Trent Bridge will be a great venue for a national final".

"From the start of the process we had clear objectives, set a strong methodology and made best use of all relevant data and insight".
