United Kingdom blames Russian Federation for crippling cyberattack

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday Russia categorically denies allegations from a British official that Russia was responsible for the "NotPetya" cyber-attack previous year.

In an official statement released on Thursday, Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad said that the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has concluded that the Russian military was "almost certainly responsible for the destructive NotPetya cyber-attack of June 2017".

Ukraine was the first hit by NotPetya a year ago, with the country swiftly pointing the finger at Russian Federation as the source of the malware.

Most cybersecurity experts agree that NotPetya/GoldenEye was merely crafted to work like ransomware but was instead primarily aimed at destabilizing Ukraine - not necessarily to turn a profit for the attackers.

Given the high confidence assessment and the broader context, the United Kingdom government has made the judgement that the Russian government - the Kremlin - was responsible for this cyber-attack.

"We have entered a new era of warfare, witnessing a destructive and deadly mix of conventional military might and malicious cyber-attacks", Williamson noted.

Russian state oil company Rosneft and US pharmaceutical giant Merck were among the businesses also hit by the attack.

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) today revealed it came to the same conclusion, noting that the malware was only masquerading as ransomware and its main objective was to disrupt.

Russian Federation denied it meddled, and Trump says there was no collusion.

Britain's defence minister has accused the Russian government of "undermining democracy" with a cyberattack that targeted Ukraine and spread across Europe previous year. Its indiscriminate design caused it to spread further, affecting other European and Russian business. It costs hundreds of millions of pounds to organizations across Europe. In November a year ago, prime minister Theresa May called out the country for allegedly hacking into systems during elections and spreading fake news.

Minister Ahmad said the Kremlin had "positioned Russian Federation in direct opposition to the West", but that the country could still "be the responsible member of the global community that it claims to be rather than secretly trying to undermine it".
