Winter Olympics: 'Trump' and 'Kim' thrown out of Opening Ceremony

At PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in the South Korean city, flag bearers (North Korean ice hockey player Hwang Chung-gum and South Korean bobsledder Won Yun-jong, according to The Hollywood Reporter) waved a large white "unification" flag with the blue Korean peninsula in the middle.

Additionally, Thomas Bach, the president of International Olympic Committee, revealed that there will actually be a special ceremony to re-distribute the medals that were awarded at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Oh, and a fake Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, who were promptly escorted out of the stadium. During the parade of nations, they stood only for the US team.

Iran had summoned South Korea's ambassador to Tehran to explain the apparent snub. Also in the photo are South Korean President Moon Jae-in (bottom left in the white coat) and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (bottom right, next to Pence) - both close United States allies whose countries are in the direct crosshairs of North Korea.

At the opening ceremony for the Games, Mr Pence, Kim Yo-jong and Kim Yong-nam were seated in close proximity to each other.

Even so, there's also cautious optimism, or curiosity at least.

Police were investigating the incident, but they said no arrests had been made.

And, of course, the USA contingent, including the snowboarders Shaun White and Chloe Kim, figure skater Nathan Chen, and skiers Lindsey Vonn and the likely breakout star of the 2018 Games, Mikaela Shiffrin.

Arriving on her brother Kim Jong Un's white private jet for a three-day visit, Kim Yo Jong and the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam are scheduled to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on February 10 in a luncheon at Seoul's presidential palace. Pence and the Kims seemed to go out of their way not to acknowledge each other.

"The North Koreans should understand that for a summit or any kind of serious talks to occur, Moon needs to be able to take something to Washington - something that addresses denuclearisation", he said before the North's invitation to Moon was announced.

At the first North-South dialogue in two years, it agreed to field a joint women's ice hockey team and have its athletes enter with those from the South at the opening ceremony.

Pence's office didn't directly address Kim's invitation to Moon.

"I am very confident, as President Trump is, that President Moon will continue to stand strongly with us in our extreme-pressure campaign", Pence told NBC in an interview, maintaining all options were open to deal with the crisis. He had earlier met Kim Yong Nam during a dinner he hosted for visiting dignitaries. Many in Seoul, however, while interested in the warming high-level contacts, are also tempering expectations for a real breakthrough.

Some North Korean experts believe tough United Nations sanctions that are cutting off most of the isolated North's sources of revenue have added pressure on Pyongyang to engage further with Seoul.

Here: a snowboard whopper called "big air", with the world's tallest ramp, one of four new events on the Winter Games program.

Kim Yo Jong, 30, is the first member of North Korea's ruling family to visit the South since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

South Korea allowed the North to use a 9,700-ton ferry to transport more than 100 artists to perform at the Olympics, treating it as an exemption to maritime sanctions it imposed on its rival, and is now considering whether to accept the North's request to supply fuel for the ship.

After the threats, missile launches and general nastiness from the North over the previous year, there is still a lot of anger, fear and skepticism in the South.

The discussions from Saturday's meeting weren't immediately released.

The Winter Olympics that opened here Friday are taking on an unusually political tone as North Korea tries to drive a wedge between South Korea and the USA through an aggressive charm offensive. Pence carried a similar message.
