Winter Olympics: US figure skating pair competes with heavy hearts

"It will be a most unique bond because there is no other pair competing at the Games that is married, so it will be one in a million", added Alexa.

"I think I kind of put pressure on myself today because I wanted to honor those who were lost and skate really well for them and kind of have somewhat of a happy moment for our country", the Washington Post quoted Scimeca-Knierim as saying.

"I am disappointed with the way we performed today, but so many people at home are hurting because their children have died", she said, according to The Associated Press.

"We'll get there someday", Alexa told reporters about their skate.

She stopped to gather herself as her husband patted her on the head.

They executed their signature move, a quad twist, but Chris fell on both side-by-side jumps and Alexa bobbled a landing on a throw triple Salchow.

The two helped the USA figure skating team win bronze in the team competition earlier this week but struggled on Wednesday after she touched the ice with her hand in a throw triple flip.

White also joins fellow American Kelly Clark (who won a gold and two bronzes) on top of the overall medal tally for the sport. "It was the highlight of our program, unfortunately". They skated four stressful programs in a span of a week, and with practice sessions and early morning wake-up calls, it's been a wearing time. "We hate to skate poorly enough for a team not here to feel they could've done better than us".

A husband and wife figure skating pair have chosen to rest and relax over champagne and roses on Valentine's Day after qualifying for the main event on Wednesday. They say our story is an inspiration and they enjoy watching us.

The only American pair at the Olympics helped team US win a bronze medal in the team event and overcame some major obstacles to even get there in the first place.

Before Scimeca-Knierim left the media zone, she asked to deliver a message back to those mourning in the U.S. Even though we're here in Pyeongchang, our hearts are with them.
