Xiaomi hopes to boost global market sales with new Microsoft agreement

Xiaomi hopes to boost global market sales with new Microsoft agreement

"We've been very happy in our collaboration with Microsoft, and we're very happy to continue deepening the relationship with the signing of this strategic memorandum of understanding", said Xiaomi Senior Vice President Wang Xiang.

Today's deal isn't the first agreement between Microsoft and Xiaomi. As Xiaomi rises, several key Microsoft products could benefit, including its Azure cloud platform and Cortana virtual assistant.

In the cloud, Xiaomi will use Microsoft's Azure platform to support "data storage, bandwidth, computing and other cloud services in worldwide markets", as it seeks to expand globally. Right now, the company uses Microsoft's cloud computing regions in China (which are operated by a local company) to power its Mi Cloud service.

This new strategic partnership between the two will also focus on a wide range of AI services, with projects based on things like computer vision, natural language processiong, and conversational AI. It's unclear what those will entail in practice, however.

With smart speakers featuring Alexa, Google Assistant, and now even Siri on shelves, it's certainly felt like it was only a matter of time before we'd see one featuring Cortana.

Microsoft Corp. andXiaomi Inc. signed a strategic agreement to work together in areas that combine their software and hardware strengths, deepening a almost 2-year-old partnership as the Chinese smartphone-maker prepares for a multibillion-dollar IPO later this year.

The deal, which is basically just an agreement in principle with no formal strings attached, details that executives from both companies are exploring ways to integrate Cortana with Xiaomi's speakers because both companies feel that it is "a market segment projected to grow rapidly in the next few years". "Microsoft's unique strengths and experience in AI, as well as our products like Azure, will enable Xiaomi to develop more cutting-edge technology for everyone around the world". Other initiatives this partnership will pursue include Xiaomi using tapping into Microsoft's Azure cloud platform as it attempts to gain more of the global market share, as well as a joint development and marketing effort on Xiaomi's laptops.
