Organized by Avaaz, a US -based civic organization that emphasizes global activism, intends for the "Monument for our Kids" to put pressure on Congress to take action on gun control.

The shoes will be donated when the monument is dismantled. Prominent celebrities, including Bette Midler and Chelsea Handler, helped publicize the drive via social media.

The shoes will be on display from 8:30 a.m.to 2 p.m. on Tuesday on the southeast lawn of the U.S. Capitol across from the Library of Congress.

"I'll travel to D.C. literally wearing my son Daniel's shoes, the ones he wore the day he died at Columbine", said Tom Mauser. The display is part of a massive memorial by a community organization called Avaaz.

"The culture on guns is shifting, and we can all feel it", she said. Her daughter survived the shooting.

In the shadow of the Capitol, an emotional tribute to child victims of gun violence took an unorthodox format: Thousands of shoes.

According to marchforourlives.com, which has a map of planned protests across the country, there are also events planned for Clearwater, Pinellas Park, Brandon and Plant City.

The memorial comes the day before the scheduled national student walkout to protest gun violence following the Parkland, Fla. high school shooting last month that killed 17 people.

The demonstration was genuine and took place on 13 March 2018. There has been, on average, at least one school shooting a week in the United States since 2013.
