'American Idol' 2018 capitalizes on chemistry, connection, and second chances

The veteran show host introduces spanking new judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry.

Season two finalist and CT resident Kimberley Locke gives us a whole recap. On Sunday night, she performed an original country song and also received approval for Perry, Bryan, and Richie. The charismatic 17 year old skips school to audition in NY with a cutesy original folk-pop tune called "21st Century Machine".

Nineteen-year-old Benjamin Glaze got more than he bargained for when he appeared on American Idol. She's next in line to inherit her family's furniture store, but won't have to if she can make it as a singer.




The Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg compared the rebooted version of "American Idol" to the most recent previous seasons, noting it became "warmer and fuzzier and less scathing and mocking with each passing year". The banter, the bartering, and the competition between the judges consistently overtake the proceedings on "The Voice", and even Kelly Clarkson [VIDEO] voiced reservations about the 2018 incarnation of the competition that she took in the first year, going head-to-head with her current station on "The Voice". Luckily, her somewhat over-the-top rendition of Ariana Grande's "Dangerous Woman" was enough to convince the judges to save her from a life of drudgery and send her to Hollywood. He started playing guitar when he was 16 years old. Now living in Orlando, Sardor informs us that he has "a big range" and can sing "the male part and the female part" of songs. Katy said Harper's voice hasn't reached its "ultimate potential" yet but she'd be a dream for Hollywood to carve out. Perry said his presentation felt a bit "rushed", and added "maybe that's because I sped up your BPM". He admits to the judges that he's never kissed a girl, and gets knocked for a loop when Perry tricks him into a kiss on the lips.

While the show had seen its share of judges from the original panel of Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell to newcomers like Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez, it's safe to say it also had its share of comical moments. The judges are blown away and he gets his golden ticket.

You look at someone like Layla Spring, who's the same age as Alyssa, and it's clear that Layla's young age/lack of experience really showed during her performance, despite having some really nice moments in the song. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
