ATP Miami: Thanasi Kokkinakis stuns Roger Federer to write history

ATP Miami: Thanasi Kokkinakis stuns Roger Federer to write history

Federer now has a losing streak after a career-best 17-0 start to the year.

In other matches on Friday, second seed Marin Cilic, of Croatia, eased past Pierre-Hugues Herbert, of France, 7-5, 6-3; Canada's Milos Raonic rolled over Swede Mikael Ymer 6-3, 6-3; third seeded Grigor Dimitrov defeated Maximilian Marterer 4-6, 6-2, 6-1; and South Korea's Chung Hyeon toppled unseeded Matthew Ebden 6-3, 7-5. It's how he got to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings and occupied the top spot for 223 weeks during his career.

'I wouldn't go out on the court if I didn't believe I can win a tennis match.

"[Kokkinakis] was just a bit better than me today", Federer said.

"When I feel like I am playing on my terms, I don't think there's too many people who can go with me". The match was his first against Federer, although they have practised together. His lone break for a 3-1 lead was all he needed to pocket the set.

Given his impressive record this year, it would've been a treat for tennis fans to see if Federer could challenge the King of Clay Rafael Nadal in Paris later this spring.

"It felt like every time I had chances, something bad happened for me, wrong decision making by me, good decision making by him", he said.

He added: "The circumstances that I was in the last two years were very challenging".

Zverev will next face veteran David Ferrer after the Spanish 28th seed cruised past Evgeny Donskoy 6-2 6-2.

Sixth-seeded South African Kevin Anderson, tenth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych, 11th-seeded American Sam Querrey, 15th-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini and 16th-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta each fared much better in their respective matches, winning in straight sets. "That's all. That's all it is", the former world number one told reporters after a 6-3 6-4 defeat by Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Having fallen 4-1 behind, Federer could have been further adrift but he saved two break points to make Kokkinakis serve out to force a decider - which he nonchalantly did to love.

Adrian Mannarino, Kyle Edmund and Damir Dzumhur joined Federer as the seeds to fall. Kokkinakis advances to a third-round meeting with Fernando Verdasco, who came from a set down to win the all-Spanish contest against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
