Biplab Deb named new Tripura CM, Debbarma Deputy CM

Tripura chief minister-designate Biplab Deb has urged the people of the state to maintain peace and said anybody indulging in violence would be punished. "On the contrary, our people are admitted to hospitals", BJP's Sunil Deodhar said.

The BJP and its ally, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), swept the February 18 polls, winning 43 of the 59 seats for which elections were held.

BJP national secretary H Raja's statement on social media that it was now the turn of Periyar statues in Tamil Nadu raged a debate, with Raja drawing flak from opposition parties. "Today it is Lenin's statue in Tripura, tomorrow it will be the statue of caste fanatic EVR Ramasamy", he wrote in Tamil on his Facebook page Tuesday, along with a video of Lenin's statue being brought down by a bulldozer in Belonia town in south Tripura.

Earlier in the day, 48-year-old Deb was unanimously elected the leader of BJP legislature party, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who was present in the meeting as the central observer, said.




The statue would be handed over to the authorities of Belonia Municipal Corporation, the SP said.

Prohibitory orders were clamped on several areas of West Tripura district including - Srinagar, Lefunga, Mandai, Amtali, Radhapur, Arundhatinagar, Jirania, Mohanpur following post-poll violence, district magistrate Milind Ramteke said.

CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, who criticised the incidents, described the tweet as "unfortunate". The duo have been arrested, the police said, adding that while Muthuraman was suspected to be a BJP worker, Francis is believed to be a CPI activist. "BJP-IPFT wants to use their newly acquired power to smash that support base thru physical attacks, torching of offices, intimidation & bullying.#StandByTripuraLeft".

The state of Tripura has been witnessing serious tension between party workers of BJP and CPM.
