Bose AR glasses launched, will tell you what you are looking at

Just days after this announcement Bose has announced a pair of sunglasses that also offer augmented reality functionality via audio.

Bose Ventures, a team dedicated to investing in startups has "set up a US$50 million (RM195 million) venture fund" to further develop apps, services, and technology that would "leverage and extend the Bose AR platform", while approved developers and manufacturers will have access to the glasses and software development kit this summer. There are no headphones or speakers built-into these glasses, but the company says it uses a minuscule acoustics package developed for the AR platform.

At SXSW, Bose unveiled a prototype AR smartglasses which is rather surprising as the company is an audio company, but the glasses do not stray far from their roots as it is said to add an audible layer of information and experiences to what you see rather than displaying information for the user.

The Bose AR glasses are not almost the finished product, but this product will purportedly tell you information about objects in the real world that you are looking at. Think of sunglasses that work like Bose headphones and that's what Bose AR is all about. Bose AR glasses are also created to connect to your device via Bluetooth, so you can use the glasses to access Google Assistant or take phone calls.

"Bose AR represents a new kind of augmented reality- one that's made for anyone and every day", Bose Consumer Electronics Division Vice President John Gordon said in a statement. But the company does assure us that we will hear about more wearables based on Bose AR platform in the near future.

Sensors in the glasses track the orientation of a listener and integrate with an iOS or Android device to track location and motion, which is sent to the AR-enabled application in the wearables. Additionally, the Bose AR glasses will be able to translate a sign, or explain the story behind a painting and of course, use it for music as well like say putting a playlist right in front of you or controlling playback via head gestures. It knows which way you're facing, and can instantly connect that place and time with endless possibilities for travel, learning, music and more.

As for collaborations, some include ASICS Studio, Strava, TripAdvisor, TuneIn, and Yelp, whereas others will be announced in the future.
