Browns' Jackson keeps tabs on quarterbacks

Browns' Jackson keeps tabs on quarterbacks

Cleveland's quarterbacks got a taste last season of what life is like without Thomas protecting their backside.

- Jackson previously said that he would jump in Lake Erie if the Browns went winless and he plans to make good on his word.

The Browns are expected to draft a quarterback with the first overall pick, but Jackson said it is too soon to say who that will be. "But there are some fine quarterbacks in this year's draft".

That means the Browns will likely choose from the pool of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield for the much-needed franchise QB.

After his official press conference with the gathered media on the lower floor of the Convention Center, Jackson made an appearance with Nathan Zegura for an interview on the Browns official website.

"There are always outliers", Jackson said.

"I've talked to Joe Thomas several times and I think Joe is going to make a decision, hopefully, fairly soon here".

"That's kind of how you want your room set up", Jackson said.

- The Philadelphia Eagles are going to have to purge some expensive players to create salary cap over the next few weeks and wide receiver Torrey Smith has been mentioned as a potential cap casualty. "Obviously, he's got to continue to do so and continue to do the right things, but I truly believe that Josh Gordon is going to have a great year for us".

"Sam's making the decision", Jackson said. It's a departure from the Sashi Brown years, when Jackson had little input.

"We're going to find out why it was 56.2 percent", Jackson said. "We'll all have input, but at the end of the day, I'm sure me and John will sit down and put our heads together on what's best for our organization".

- Steelers Pro Bowl linebacker Ryan Shazier will not play this season as he continues to recover from a back injury that threatened his ability to ever walk again, Colbert announced. He has no stomach for another 0-8 record by 2016 rookie Cody Kessler or 0-15 by DeShone Kizer in 2017. "While we know it can only be proven with results on the field this fall, we are excited to have added many highly-experienced individuals to both our personnel and coaching staff during the past two months, as well as by our significant opportunities to improve our team through free agency, the draft and our offseason workouts". "I would hope not", he said.

Of course, there will be pressure to play the first-rounder, but Jackson wants to win, and for him, that's spelled v-e-t-e-r-a-n.

"It's on his time", Jackson said. "This is going to be my first exposure to him personally here at the combine". "There's still guys in the league that are playing that are below 6-foot-2 and have played really well".

That doesn't sound like Mayfield to me, but again, it's early. Do I wish he was throwing to watch him compete with the other guys? "We wish he would throw, but there are going to be times to watch him work out".

He acknowledged that Darnold has some explaining to do about his 22 interceptions and 21 fumbles in 27 starts. "Well, I think the first thing, if we tender him, which we will, that's where he'll be", Jackson said.

Rosen on February 27 told NFL Network an ESPN story alleging he didn't want to play for the Browns had no basis. "Last year with Myles Garrett we had that kind of report". "I don't get concerned about those things because sometimes things get written that people don't say".
