Charter bus carrying plunges into Alabama ravine; injuries reported

Charter bus carrying plunges into Alabama ravine; injuries reported

Channelview Independent School District, which is located east of Houston, has confirmed band students from Channelview High School were on the bus to Houston after a spring break trip.

The Alabama Department of Transportation announced that eastbound traffic on I-10 was being diverted at Exit 44.

The students are members of the Channelview High School Falcon Band. He said he did not know how many passengers were injured, but said they were "numerous".

Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Major Anthony Lowery said the bus plunged off Interstate 10 into a deep ravine early Tuesday and multiple helicopters responded.

The bus plummeted into the 50-foot ravine around 6 a.m. CT and authorities believe about 45 people were on the charter bus bound for Houston. Of the injured, one was listed in critical condition, five were listed in serious condition and the others had minor injuries, authorities said.

The bus entered the median and then plunged into the ravine at about 5:30 a.m., the sheriff said.

Several hospitals were placed on alert for the injured. Rescuers had to repel down into the ravine to reach the bus, and some passengers were evacuated using ropes, Mack said.

"Everybody is being transferred to a hospital to at least be checked out", he added.

Will Condon, a spokesman for Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., said the hospital received 20 patients. He could not provide information about the extent of their injuries or conditions.

Interstate 10 was shut down in both directions about 20 miles east of Mobile, AL, during the time helicopters transported the injured to about 10 area hospitals.

The Baldwin County call center is being brought online to field calls regarding the passengers and their locations, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"Prayers and thoughts are with our families", company officials said.

A hotline was set up for Texas family members to call for a status update: 251-972-6807.

We will be updating this story throughout the morning and day.
