Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith for 'The Crown'

However, that will not help Foy, as she and Smith have completed their two series of the drama.

"The Crown" star Claire Foy was paid less than her male co-star Matt Smith even though she played the Queen of England, producers Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries said at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

Foy, however, will not be reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth. "Who" on television - one of Britain's most popular shows, the producers said.

The Crown's salary news is just the latest instance of Hollywood's egregious wage gap. British actress Olivia Coleman is stepping in to play the older monarch as upcoming Season 3 of the show moves into the 1970s.

They didn't explain why Foy continued to earn less than Smith in the second season, after she eclipsed his fame with her award-winning performance.

According to Variety, on Tuesday, the show's producers said at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem that Foy, who won a Golden Globe for her work on the show a year ago, made less money than her on-screen husband, actor Matt Smith. Most recently, it was revealed that Michelle Williams made virtually nothing in comparison with her "All the Money in the World costar Mark Wahlberg, despite their near-equal star status".

'Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen, ' said Mackie.

According to Variety, Elisabeth Moss earned $200,000 per episode on The Handmaid's Tale after racking up six Emmy nominations during her time on Mad Men.

She earned a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actor's Guild Awards for best actress following the first season. If the (TV version of the) queen of the freaking commonwealth can't get fair pay, what hope do the rest of us have? The same report approximated that This Is Us breakout Chrissy Metz, like Foy, also made $40,000 per episode, but The Crown filmed 10 episodes its first season versus This Is Us's 18.

The pay difference was due to Smith coming into the show after a six-year stint as "Dr". Recasting for the role of Prince Philip hasn't yet been announced.
