Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith for The Crown

Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith for The Crown

According to Variety, Crown producers Andy Harries and Suzanne Mackie revealed the disparity at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem on Thursday, stating the difference was due to Smith's previous high-profile role in Doctor Who.

Claire's character was undeniably the main character of the show's first two seasons - which centred on the life of the monarch as she took on the role of Queen. "However, Hollywood and London may have to reassess whether there should be some kind of SAG pay scale". If we look at how few lead roles there are available for non-white actors, we can imagine how producers will be able to justify paying their BAME cast members less than their white co-stars who will have had so many more opportunities to play great parts.

Before her role on "The Crown", Foy appeared in several episodes of United Kingdom drama series "Upstairs Downstairs" and played Anne Boleyn in the Emmy-nominated "Wolf Hall" miniseries.

I hope that whoever is replacing Smith (rumor has it that it's Hugh Laurie) will be making less money than Olivia Colman, as promised, because as Mackie said, "no one gets paid more than the Queen".

However, even if the pay gap is remedied in future seasons, it won't benefit Foy, whose work on the series is over.

The creators of Netflix production The Crown have admitted that Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth II, was paid less than Matt Smith, who played her husband the Duke of Edinburgh.

Smith, 35, was not similarly honoured. Prince Philip will also be played by a different actor.

The Crown is one of the most expensive television shows ever produced, costing a reported $130 million (all figures US) for the first season. While it has not yet been disclosed exactly how much Smith was paid, Foy earned $40,000 per episode of The Crown. Wahlberg later donated his salary to Time's Up, the campaign against workplace sexual misconduct.
