Delhi: Uber driver arrested for molesting women passenger

The woman noticed that the cab had a white number plate instead of the yellow one and had tinted glasses and when she tried to get out from the vehicle at a traffic signal, the driver locked the doors using central locking system, Mr Khan said.

According to the Uber's statement, the company have initiated an action against the driver and are cooperating with the Haryana police in the investigation as well.

The incident happened at around 7 pm when the woman boarded the cab which did not have a yellow number plate. Once he quit, Amit employed the accused, Sanjeev alias Sanju, but didn't inform the company as he did not want to pay the charges associated with changing the driver. There was, however, no response to a query as to how a private vehicle with tinted glasses was allegedly pressed into service. During the investigation, the police came to know that the driver locked the women in the auto by activating the car's central locking system when she wanted to leave it.

Uber, terming it as a case of "identity theft", has said it has removed the original registered driver.

The woman lives with her husband in outer Delhi's Rohini and drives to work in Sonepat. "She got into the cab around 7pm, but noticed that the vehicle did not have a yellow number plate. We will also book the car's owner and issue a notice to Uber", said Khan.

The women grew suspicious when the driver was not matching with the image of the driver provided by the Uber app and later on the way, she also came to realize that the driver is not taking the route which she usually takes. "The driver called someone and spoke about meeting somewhere and drinking together". He drove the vehicle though he was not registered as a Uber driver. "The woman tried to jump out of the vehicle when it slowed down at a traffic junction near Mukarba Chowk, but the driver activated the central locking system", said Khan. Moreover, he also threatened her and tried to make unwanted approaches. "She screamed for help, but was unable to draw anyone's attention", said Khan. Eventually, when the auto slowed down at one point, she managed to unlock the door and jump out before making a PCR call. "Simultaneously, we sought the cab details from Uber", said the DCP.

The police said that the driver absconded from the spot along with the vehicle.
