Federal Bureau of Investigation officials recommend firing former deputy director about to retire

Even though outgoing Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe is set to retire next week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions might fire him anyway.

Sources tell the newspaper that although they expect McCabe to be fired, no decision has been made yet. McCabe never intentionally misled investigators and did his best to accurately address investigators' questions, according to those sources.

President Trump has frequently slammed McCabe, seeing him as biased against his administration and in the tank for Hillary Clinton during the campaign.

"The department follows a prescribed process by which an employee may be terminated", said the spokeswoman, Sarah Isgur Flores. Previously, Trump reportedly asked McCabe to ask his wife how it felt to be a loser after learning McCabe's wife had run for office at the state level in Virginia, so it wasn't very surprising when McCabe went on leave in order to run out the clock before he could retire.

The inspector general has since last January been investigating the FBI and Justice Department's handling of the politically charged probe into Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, which is separate from the foundation probe. That process includes recommendations from career employees and no termination decision is final until the conclusion of that process. The Justice Department's inspector general concluded that Mr. McCabe was not forthcoming during the review, according to the people briefed on the matter. "We have no personnel announcements at this time".

In 2016, McCabe evidently authorized a top aide and the FBI's chief spokesman to speak with a Wall Street Journal reporter for a story indicating that McCabe battled with Obama appointees within the Justice Department to allow an FBI investigation into the Clinton Foundation to continue.

The Wall Street Journal story was written by Devlin Barrett, who is now a reporter at The Washington Post. In December, FBI director Chris Wray defended McCabe, telling lawmakers he would "quarrel" with suggestions that McCabe has expressed any sort of political bias. He is due to officially retire on Sunday, but Sessions is reviewing a formal recommendation to dismiss him.
