Federer Breezes Into Fourth Round At Indian Wells

The Swiss tennis legend needed an hour to close out his second-round victory 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

On Saturday, Federer led 6-3, 2-2 when the match was delayed by a heavy drizzle 56 minutes after it began.

Roger played much better than in the second round against Delbonis, losing serve once at the start of the match and breaking Filip five times from eight opportunities he created.

20-times Grand Slam victor Federer is chasing a sixth title at the event, and will take some stop judging by the manner in which he swatted aside his 26-year-old opponent in only 58 minutes.

Following surgery on the right elbow that hampered his efforts at the Australian Open earlier this season, the 30-year-old Serbian made a quicker-than-anticipated return to the ATP World Tour in Indian Wells with an disappointing loss to Japanese player Taro Daniel on Sunday. He lost to Chung Hyeon in the Australian Open fourth round in January before undergoing the surgery.

After his defeat, a bemused Djokovic said: "It felt like the first match I have ever played on the tour, very weird".

Former No. 1 and tenth-seed Angelique Kerber rallied past Ekaterina Makarova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Petra Martic upset last year's French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-3.

"I just completely lost rhythm, everything", said Djokovic.

"I mean, a bit of both, I guess", he said.

"To me, it's not that surprising", Federer said.

"At the same time, I enjoy playing the guy, just because it's one of the ultimate challenges to play Novak, Andy, Rafa, Stan, you name it, all these guys".

"It is still early stages for Novak coming back and the first one after surgery".

Frenchman Gael Monfils survived a match point before beating big-serving American John Isner 6-7 (5) 7-6 (3) 7-5 in a contest that had only one break.

Indications that he was in good touch came in the second game of the match when he sealed a break to go 2-0 ahead.

Federer served six aces and broke the Krajinovic serve five times. The No. 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 seeds are all gone. The win sets up a third round showdown with Spaniard David Ferrer who defeated Tennys Sandgren of the USA 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).
