Finland Has Been Named The Happiest Country On Earth

This year, the annual report published by the U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network also evaluated 117 countries by the happiness and well-being of their immigrants. "It's a country in this frightful neighborhood, you've got terrorism, you've got radical Islam, you've got challenges, ' but it comes up ahead of most countries in the world", said Netanyahu.

Norway, Denmark and Iceland took second, third and fourth place respectively, while Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, and Australia made up the rest of the top 10.

Finland secured the top spot in the report, rising from fifth place past year to oust Norway.

However, it also places Israel, which turns 70 in May, among the countries that are less tolerant of migrants, and that do not accept migrants openly.

The social happiness list is calculated using measures for factors like levels of caring, freedom to make life decisions, generosity, good governance, honesty, health and income.

The foreign-born were least happy in Syria, which has been mired in civil war for seven years.

Bangladesh has slipped down five notches in this year's World Happiness Report rankings, but it remains a happier place than India and Sri Lanka.

While it's no surprise that the Scandinavian countries have yet again come out on top, it's always interesting to see in what order they fall.

Most notably, it found that the happiness of a country's immigrants is nearly identical to that of its population at large - indicating, Dr. Helliwell said in an interview, that "people essentially adjust to the average happiness level of the country they're moving to".

While convergence to local happiness levels is quite rapid, it is not complete, as there is a "footprint" effect based on the happiness in each source country. The finding on the happiness of immigrants "shows the conditions that we live under matter greatly to our quality of life, that happiness is not only a matter of choice".

This cuts both ways: A person who moves to a country high on the happiness list will probably become happier, and a person who moves to a lower-ranked country will probably become less happy. A higher value for migrant acceptance is linked to greater happiness for both immigrants and the native-born, by nearly equal amounts. The report particularly noted that Jews from the former Soviet Union considered themselves happier after they immigrated to Israel. Although set in a global context, most of the evidence and discussion are focused on the United States, where the prevalence of all three problems has been growing faster and further than in most other countries.
