Fire forces Sacajawea Head Start to evacuate students

KOIN, Portland, Oregon's CBS affiliate reported the fire starting at about 9 a.m. Portland Fire and Rescue officials said the wind-driven fire will likely burn for hours, according to KOIN.

At least three structures on the property, including an apartment and a duplex, have burned.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but firefighters confirmed it started in the scrap yard.

No injuries were reported in the eight to 10 units that were destroyed, but firefighters said more than a dozen cats died. Some nearby homes and one school were evacuated.

Air quality was another concern for people in the area. Officials said everyone working at the yard was able to get out safely.

Portland Fire & Rescue issued a one mile "shelter in place" zone around the fire while it was burning.

KOIN reported that the water supply is hard in the area, so fire and rescue officials are working with the water bureau to get more water to the fire.

About 11:30 a.m., the Fire Bureau started evacuating people from homes along Northeast 75th Avenue and said people within a mile of the fire should shutter doors and windows and turn off HVAC systems. NOTE: red small circle in the very middle is the evacuation zone and those homes need to evacuate.

Around 115 students from Sacajawea Head Start on the 4800 block of Northeast 74th Avenue were evacuated, with school buses taking the students to Scott School, 6700 N.E. Prescott St., where parents were advised to pick up their children. All students there will be kept indoors for the rest of the day.

The Oregon Public Health Association explained why the smoke is toxic.

The plume of smoke from the multiple-alarm fire could be seen for miles.

The bureau said Killingsworth and other roads are closed because of the fire, which is burning in a scrapyard near Gartner's Country Meat Market.
