Former Bullseye host Jim Bowen has died aged 80

His most popular catchphrase was super, smashing, great'.

The television personality was best known, for hosting the TV darts gameshow Bullseye in the 1980s and1980s that regularly attracted 12million viewers.

Family friend John Pleus told PA: "He passed away very peacefully, she was with him".

The Lancashire-born former deputy headmaster began his career as a stand-up comedian and rose to fame presenting Bullseye for 14 years between 1981 and 1995.

He also enjoyed cameo roles in shows such as Last Of The Summer Wine, Jonathan Creek and in Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.

"It wasn't completely unexpected, he's been ill for several weeks in hospital".




He passed away this morning with wife Phyllis by his side but it is not clear how Bowen, who had suffered several strokes over the years, died. "We are all shedding a tear", he said. "He was a very lovely, genuine man".

Bowen said in 2011 that he had learned to "appreciate all the things in life" after suffering two strokes.

FORMER boxing champion Frank Bruno and a number of darts stars have led tributes to Jim Bowen following the death of the former Bullseye presenter.

Ex-heavyweight boxer Bruno tweeted: "Jim Bowen RIP great comic we worked together many times had a lot of laughs together".

"The Royal Lancaster Infirmary were wonderful, we couldn't have asked for better".

"You can't beat a bit of Bully".

The station also said they would re-run a documentary on the game show on Wednesday evening following the "terribly sad news".
