French fashion icon Hubert de Givenchy dies aged 91

It was also the Givenchy look that former US first lady Jacqueline Kennedy adopted for her White House years, sticking to a uniform of shifts dresses, pillbox hats and low-heeled pumps.

DailyMail UK reports that Venet, a former haute couture designer, confirmed the news through the Givenchy fashion house.

"Hubert de Givenchy was a symbol of Parisian elegance for more than half a century... who revolutionized fashion", his label said Monday. But in 1952 at the advent of his fashion career Hubert de Givenchy introduced the concept of separates - skirts, blazers, pants, and blouses which could be worn in different combinations, no longer confining women to the banality of 'a dress a day'.

So the world is truly mourning the passing of French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, who died at the age of 91 on March 11.

Lifetime Achievement Award obtained, Givenchy packed up his couturier tools in 1995, but never walked away from fashion.

Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy were other famous clients of Givenchy, a name synonymous with understated elegance.

Givenchy was born into an artistic Italian-French family of marquises, the Taffin de Givenchys.

"He was the first creator to launch a luxury ready-to-wear range". Its commercial success soon enabled him to buy out his backers, making him one of only a handful of Paris couturiers to own their own label outright.

Waight Keller, at the helm of the brand since previous year, said in an Instagram post Monday she is "deeply saddened by the loss of a great man and artist I have had the honor to meet".

Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH, said he is "deeply saddened" by Givenchy's death.

The designer, who learnt his craft under Cristóbel Balenciaga, became a giant of the fashion world in every sense.

The designer, who is famous for designing the little black dress, died at the Renaissance Chateau near Paris where he lived with his partner and fellow designer, Philippe Venet.
