Giants sign 30-year-old running back Jonathan Stewart despite recent struggles

Former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart will try to change that. Terms of the deal have yet to be announced.

Vintage Stewart showed up that week as he rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns.

The Oregon product has been a steady and consistent force throughout his career with seven seasons of more than 700 rushing yards and is a powerful runner who serves as a reliable option inside the red zone and when Carolina needs a critical short-yardage pickup.

The Panthers cut Stewart on February 28.

The move reunites Stewart with former Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula, who now has the same job in NY.

Stewart worked with Shula extensively when the latter was moved from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator prior to the 2013 season. Orleans Darkwa, who led the Giants in rushing last season, is a free agent.

NY owns the second pick in the upcoming draft, and there is belief that the Giants are seriously considering picking former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the pick, should the Browns pass on him with the top selection.

Stewart will likely compete with Wayne Gallman and Paul Perkins for the Giants' starting job during training camp and the preseason. He also caught eight passes for 46 yards. The Panthers also used the No. 8 overall draft selection previous year on running back Christian McCaffrey. It is unclear whether the Giants will add anyone else to their backfield although there are some fans who would like the team to select Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick.
